SCOPERTI I TRE PIANETI PIU' PICCOLI DALLA MISSIONE KEPLER


La sonda della missione Kepler ha identificato i tre esopianeti più piccoli mai scoperti. _ .Orbitano attorno alla stella KOI-961 (una stella di Barnard), apparentemente una insignificante nana rossa della nostra galassia con un diametro un sesto del Sole, il diametro dei pianeti è rispettivamente 0.78, 0.73 e 0.57 volte più piccolo di quello della Terra; il più piccolo dei tre ha indicativamente le stesse dimensioni di Marte. _ .Tutti e tre sono pianeti rocciosi come la Terra, orbitano però molto vicino alla stella e non possono essere abitabili a causa della loro troppo elevata temperatura, il loro periodo orbitale è inferiore a 3 giorni. _ .Kepler sta monitorando continuamente la luminosità oltre 150.000 stelle, per rilevare i possibili abbassamenti dovuti al transito di eventuali pianeti. _ .Questa ultima scoperta è stata effettuata da un gruppo di astronomi del California Institute of Tecnology di Pasadena; successivamente è stata seguita ed affinata dal Palomar Observatory (San Diego) e dal Keck Observatory (Mauna Kea), che hanno consistentemente rivisto la dimensione dei pianeti, rivelando la loro piccola natura. _ .Nell'immagine il raffronto tra la stella ed i suoi tre pianeti rispetto a Giove e le sue quattro Lune Medicee.
