History of Torre Luciana
Of the village of Luciana only the Tower has remained.
it's this that stands out on the hills,along the provincial road of Testi in direction of Greve in Chianti.
Current owner of the structure is the Sacci cement works, which in 1992 has restructured the ancient structure of the Tower, later granted to the University of Siena, until 2003, in order to realize a naturalistic observatory, and, precisely, astronomical.
On the top on the South side it has been also realized a window opened on the sky, ready to accommodate a telescope.Of the a presence of Luciana, the tower and a village, we have informations since 9th century.It seems that it was a castle built from the Lodolinges or from the Longobards.
In the centuries it had various owners: in the Middle Ages the Bardi made a summer residence of it, in 17th century the Pitti made various use of it: at first a villa, then a farm, then a farmhouse.The structures next to the Tower from south date back to this period.Of the same period it is also the name Luciana; it seems due to a clerical error of topographical papers of the time for the lands where the people of Luciano inhabited.
On the edge of the Tower's hill has been placed, in occasion of the repair of 1992, a gigantic scythe-shaped sculpture by Mauro Staccioli.During the Nineties, a group of students, astrophiles and keens of astronomy has approached the Tower, under the guide of the University of Siena and Professor Vincenzo Millucci.
The structure is currently managed by the municipality of San Casciano, which has designed it to the astronomical activities of Torre Luciana Observatory.

degi telescopi. |

Il cielo stellato Nonostante che Torre Luciana sia vicina a Firenze (25 Km dal Ponte Vecchio) il territorio a Sud è completamente buio e sgombro da ostacoli. |

Struttura ricettiva La parte Longobarda è stata finemente ristrutturata e presenta al suo interno vari ambienti ben utilizzabili. C' una piccola ma efficiente cucina dotata di tutto il necessario per scaldarsi qualche vivanda. La stanza adibita a dormitorio presenta 10 brandine - ricordiamoci però che in Osservatorio la notte non si dorme, si guarda il cielo!!! L'auletta divulgativa accoglie fino ad un massimo di 25 persone ed è attrezzata con proiettore e vari oggetti didattici come un Tellurio che ci consente di spiegare in maniera molto chiara i moti dei pianeti e in particolare quelli della Terra e della Luna.

Il piazzale osservativo Il grande piazzale osservativo è pavimentato e dotato di impianto elettrico a 220 Volt. Inoltre una zona di questo piazzale viene di solito destinata a coloro che hanno un PC per fotografare con la WebCam o con la CCD Il parcheggio per le auto degli Astrofili confina col piazzale pavimentato (rialzato di 40 cm) permettendo così un facile trasporto dei delicatissimi (e a volte pesantissimi) strumenti ottici.
